Composite bonding – the NEED to know…

30th Aug 2022

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a fantastic, minimally invasive, alternative to veneers which can be used to create your dream smile.

Some of the instances composite bonding can be used are…

  • correct gaps in-between the teeth
  • chips and imperfections
  • tooth surface wear
  • small overlaps in the teeth
  • enhancing the shape of your teeth and contouring them
  • a full smile makeover with minimal interference to your natural teeth

Composite material is matched to the shade of your teeth (or whiter if appropriate), and bonded to your teeth carefully shaping and contouring so it blends in seamlessly.

Composite bonding can be completed in one appointment – same day smile makeover? Yes please!

Is there anything I need to do before Composite Bonding?

In all cases, we need to see you for a new patient consultation. Having healthy gums and teeth is key to having long-lasting, beautiful composite bonding. Please don’t worry if you’ve not been to see a dentist for a while.

Visit us for a new patient examination and we can discuss how you’d LOVE your smile to look and we can come up with a plan to help you get there.

Most of the time, our patients whiten their teeth before bonding with our Boutique Whitening system

This is so we can make sure you can have the shade of composite you desire. It also means we can put the thinnest layer of composite on the teeth possible. This is to help them look and feel amazing in your mouth.

Once you have completed teeth whitening, we would book you in for your same-day composite bonding smile makeover! This is completed two weeks later.

Is Composite Bonding Right For Me?

Composite bonding isn’t for everyone. At your consultation your dentist will discuss the limitations with composite bonding and whether it will be able to deliver the results you are hoping for.

If your teeth are very crowded or you have an over or under bite you may find traditional orthodontic treatment will be better suited. Bonding is primarily for those who seek a cosmetic solution for teeth that are otherwise healthy. Rest assured, we will come up with a plan that works for you.

Planning is a key part of the process. We need to understand your expectations and discuss the possible options and outcome. The dentist can usually do a reversible “mock up” to give you a visual idea of what the result could be.

If you want whiter teeth it may be appropriate to have them whitened with our Boutique whitening system before bonding. Two weeks after whitening is achieved your teeth will be ready for bonding.

What Can You Expect During Your Visit?

Composite bonding is a safe, effective and minimally invasive technique. Bonding can often be carried out without the need for a local anaesthetic. The treatment itself may require the removal of some surface enamel, depending on the desired outcome. This will be discussed at your planning appointment.

Composite is bonded to your teeth in small increments and it is hardened using a special blue light. Once bonding is complete the composite is then smoothed and highly polished to give a lovely shiny result.

What Aftercare Is Needed?

Modern composite material is durable. Over time you should expect some wear and possible staining (as with your natural teeth!)

We highly recommend regular check ups and hygiene sessions not only to check the overall health of your mouth but to re-polish or to carry out minor repairs to your composite bonding as necessary.

We also highly recommend having your composite veneers polished once per year to keep them looking fresh.

If you’re interested in achieving a brighter smile, composite bonding is a great option. We currently have an offer on so there’s never been a better time to know more!
